RESEARCH, IN CONTEXT
Sauna and longevity: read the evidence carefully
A promising association is different from proof that a spa session extends life.

What the frequently quoted study examined
A 2015 prospective study followed 2,315 Finnish men aged 42–60 at baseline. More frequent traditional sauna bathing was associated with lower rates of several fatal cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality. It was observational: participants were not randomly assigned to different sauna habits.
Researchers adjusted for multiple measured factors, but residual confounding remained possible. Participants were men accustomed to Finnish sauna use, and habits were assessed at baseline. Those features limit how confidently the findings apply to other populations and practices.
What it does not establish
It does not prove that sauna caused longer life, that a prescribed number of sessions will benefit an individual, or that infrared saunas, steam rooms, hammams and cold-plunge packages deliver the same outcome. The authors specifically cautioned against directly transferring their findings to different heat settings.
Our editorial interpretation: this is a reason to keep studying heat exposure, not a basis for a guaranteed longevity promise. An association is not a personal treatment protocol.
A practical decision
If you enjoy bathing or heat and it is suitable for you, compare comfort, facility quality and cost. Discuss heart or circulation conditions, pregnancy, fainting or relevant medicines with a clinician first. Follow facility precautions, avoid alcohol and stop if you feel unwell. Cold immersion has its own risks and is optional.
